Stonehaven Stump 2nd Ellon
Ellon travelled to Stonehaven on Saturday not knowing if the game would be on or not due to the atrocious weather conditions. Captain Huw Owen lost the toss and Ellon were put into bat on a wicket that looked very wet and soft.
Ean Mackie and Chris Watson opened the batting for Ellon and were moving on at a steady rate with Watson hitting the boundaries and Mackie playing the support role. However when Mackie was bowled by Bob Potter everything seemed to go wrong.
Debutant 14 year old Craig White joined Watson at crease but it was not long before Watson was heading back to the changing room when he was bowled by James Ferrier for 21.
Steve Palmer came in to steady the ship but he was bowled by Potter for 3 putting the Ellon batting order into Disarray. Fortunately for Ellon Ian Duncan and White put together a useful partnership until White became Potter’s third victim of the day when he was bowled as well.
Owen joined Duncan and the pair looked like Ellon were coming back into the match but just when Duncan was starting to get his eye in he played a unnecessary sweep shot and was well caught by Tim Newell off the bowling of Steve Crozier.
Gordon Smith joined his captain and the pair put on Ellon’s biggest partnership of the day, which was 31. Both batsmen played sensibly until Owen played a rash shot, which was plucked out of the air by Gardiner and was out for a well-played 22.
Bert Lawrence came in to replace Owen but it was his partner Smith who was next to go when he was athletically caught and bowled by Crozier for 11.
Alan McKean was the next man in and it was Lawrence who was out next when he tried to repeat a shot that he played the previous ball which went for 4 but this time he picked out Newell at square leg.
Gary Dawson came to the crease but it was McKean that was next to go when Newell bowled him without scoring.
Last man Alistair Mustoe replaced McKean but it was Dawson who left him stranded at the non-strikers end when he was LBW to Chris Millener for 4.
Ellons’ innings disappointedly finished on 107 all out from 39 overs.
Owen and Duncan opened the bowling for Ellon against the batsmen of Mike Millener and Steve Crozier. Both bowlers toiled away against the batsmen but did not get any success until Steve Palmer was introduced into the attack and he bowled Crozier with a “full toss” but by this stage Stonehaven were well on their way to reaching the total and the score was on 51.
Chris Watson was introduced at the other end and he bowled well and he picked up Ellon’s next wicket when he fooled Gardiner to playing all around the ball.
Eventually Ellon got out Mike Millener who was bowled by Watson for 67. Stonehaven were practically home and dry with the score on 96.
But Ian Duncan had Tim Newell caught and bowled too add to the tension but James Ferrier came in and scored the winning runs and Stonehaven had reached Ellon’s total with the loss of only 4 wickets.
Ellon entertain Gordonians at home on Saturday
knowing that only a better batting performance will see them pick up the
points.
