Burford Bowls Over Portcullis
Ellon travelled to Duthie Park to play league leaders Portcullis who could boast a 100% record so far this season.
Captain Huw Owen won the toss and decided to bowl on what looked like a fast bowler friendly wicket. He decided to open the bowling attack with himself and Steve Burford.
Portcullis openers Dave Bowie and Howard Smith looked content to push the singles and quickly pushed the score onto 20 before Steve Burford picked up his 1st wicket with a ball that Dave Bowie made a real meal over before it hit his pad then went onto the stumps. This was the breakthrough that the Captain was hoping for and Bowie despite his ageing bones and beer belly is a decent batsman.
Burford was working up a head of steam by now and only 2 balls later he had Paul Brown walking back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. Brown is usually a big hitting batsman so it was unexpected that he had been dismissed so easily and quickly.
Smith was the next batsman to go when he was leg before wicket to Burford to give him his 3rd wicket of the afternoon. Smith scored 33 the week before so he was one of the danger men of the Portcullis batting line up.
Next batsman to go was Craig Wilson when he was adjudged leg before wicket to Owen for 1.
Ross Bowie came to the wicket and Ellon assumed that he was Portcullis’s last real hope for setting a decent total for the Ellon batsmen to chase. But Ian Duncan took a breathtaking catch at short cover to dismiss the star batsman off the bowling of Burford to reduce Portcullis to 27 for 6.
Worse was to come for Portcullis was when Richard Collinson became Burfords’ 5th victim of the day when he too was bowled for 0. Now Portcullis were 27 for 7 an Ellon assumed that they would knock over the remaining wickets is double time.
But Bob Adie and Alan Dobey put together a partnership of 60 in 16 overs. Skipper Owen shuffled his bowlers around and the ‘fiery’ Ross Wade and Alistair Stallard were tried with little success so he threw the ball to Chris Watson to see what he could do.
Watson removed Bob Adie in his 4th over to the delight of his team-mates as the partnership between Adie and Dobey was frustrating the Ellon fielders. Adie batted well for 22 runs.
Last weeks batting hero Steve Palmer was brought on to finish off the Portcullis innings and he did not disappoint by bowling Dobey with his first ball who top scored with 28. Then he bowled Marco Borato 3 balls later to dismiss Portcullis for 92.
Owen decided to open the batting with himself and Ian Duncan. Both were making steady progress then Duncan had a rush of blood and hit Ross Bowie straight to Bonato at Mid Wicket and was out for 7.
Steve Dalton joined his captain at the wicket with the instructions that they were to try and finish the game and lead Ellon home. Unfortunately Dave Bowie spoiled this cunning plan when he bowled Owen with a real beauty for 10. It has been suggested that the ball pitched in footmarks as the ball moved so much!!
Kenny Hutcheson was promoted up the batting order after his late order blitz the previous week. Despite playing a glorious shot over the top for 3 Kenny could not reproduce the heroics of the previous week and was bowled by Ross Bowie.
Steve Palmer joined Dalton but it was not long before he was heading back when he went through with his shot too quickly and the ball came off the back of his bat and looped to Dobey who took the catch with a great deal of satisfaction.
Ean Mackie joined Dalton, Dalton by this time was in full swing hitting boundary’s for fun. The pair scored the 41 runs required to lead Ellon to victory without any real hiccups. Dalton brought up his 1st fifty of the season with the last shot of the match.
Ellon are on their travels again next week
this time Stonehaven and hopefully with a strong side out again should
return with another 30 points.
