Dunecht Destroy Ellon
Ellon travelled to Dunecht on Saturday
quietly confident of success against the team they beat with no great effort
on the last day of last season.
Dunecht won the toss and elected to bat
– a decision they must have been regretting soon afterwards.
Ellon captain, Huw Owen opened the attack, and bowled 15 consecutive overs, ending up with figures of 1-31. The other opener was Ross Wade, a new arrival at the club, who caused absolute mayhem amongst the ranks of the Dunecht top order.
Ross dismissed 3 of the 4 opening batsmen in his first three overs, then got the fourth in his sixth over – the pace and obvious accuracy of his bowling was a treat to behold – final stats for Ross were 4 wickets for 9 runs off 8 overs – the final delivery of his eighth over proved to be Ross’ last, as he pulled up with a damaged hamstring - a crucial point in the match.
The attack was taken up by Neil Smith -a
welcome sight in the 2nd team – with his consistently accurate bowling.
Neil was responsible for removing the potentially dangerous Kevin Roberts
for a score of 3, and followed this with another wicket in his last over.
Neil’s figures were 2 wickets for 32 runs off 10 overs.
Supporting the Ellon attack, the “men
in the field” were outstanding.
Gary Dawson took 3 catches, including that of top scorer Horobin, whilst Bert Lawrence and Ean Mackie both took one a piece.
The final bowler for Ellon was Aussie Graham Fraser. Graham’s unorthodox action seems to unease many a fine batsman - Dunecht were no different – by removing both Horobin and captain Simon Bennett in his second over, it was fair to say that things were looking up for Ellon.
Fraser went on to get the final wicket,
ending his day on 3 wickets, for 12 runs of 3.3 overs.
Dunecht’s innings came to an end with
a total of 96, in 36.3 overs.
As is usual at Dunecht, the interval tea was excellent – the number of cakes and “good things” eaten by the Ellon men, may well have contributed to the problems encountered during Phase Two of the day.
Ean Mackie and Gordon Smith got things
going at a nice steady pace, being 12 off 5.2 overs, before Smith went
for one cover drive too many, and got caught. Lawrence Meikle, promoted
to number three was there to disrupt the bowling attack with his usual
array of attacking shots. The ploy seemed to be working, in that LM was
certainly “going” for his shots – unfortunately, he was failing to connect
with the ball – rather an important part of the whole strategy. LM was
out for 1 run.
Next up was Graham Fraser. The captains
instructions were to steady things up a bit – see through a good few overs
before cutting loose – Fraser stood at the non-strikers end for a whole
over, having to witness the demise of Ean Mackie (6), followed the very
next ball by Huw Owen. Neil Smith entered the fray and survived the final
3 balls of that over.
Adhering to the captains wishes, Frasers
response was 4-6-4 off the next 3 deliveries, and Ellons fortunes appeared
to have been swayed, once again by the big Aussie. This time however,
his efforts were thwarted by an absolutely amazing catch, at deep mid-wicket,
just feet short of another spectacular maximum, his innings ending on 18.
Neil Smith remained to take on the attack, joined by Bert Lawrence (1),
Gary Dawson(1), Ross Wade (1),
Martin Buchan (0), and finally by Alan
McKean (4 not out), who held the innings together for six overs, whilst
adding an important 2 batting point to the Ellon tally.
Ellon’s innings ended on 61 - the
batsmen in the side will have to show improvement soon if they hope to
be contenders for promotion out of Grade 4.
