ELLON “RUN OUT” OF KINTORE

Johnstone Cup Semi Final

Ellon’s second string cricketers look unlikely to gain the anticipated promotion out of Grade 4 this season, so a good run in the cup ending in a third Cup Final in a row would be most welcome.

Ellons opening bowling attack of Huw Owen and Ross Wade gave the team plenty to be encouraged  about, bowling accurately and without conceding boundaries. Owen removed A Stalker for only 2 runs in the 5th over, and Wade dismissed the dangerous J Coutts the very next over, quickly followed by another of Kintores most able batsmen M Auld in the 10th over, with the score on 17.

G Prosser joined A Auld at the crease, and they steadied things for the home team – but were frustrated by the tight bowling. Eventually Auld was caught behind by the ever youthful Ean Mackie, off  Steve Palmers bowling. Palmer then took another 3 wickets, resulting in the arrival of P Walker who joined the aggressive Prosser, and together they took the score from 82-8 off 30 overs, to a final tally of 145-8 off their allotted 40 overs.

Although the asking rate was just below 4 per over, Ellon were confident that they had the batsmen to see them safely through to the final. Steve Dalton and Ean Mackie got things underway, but struggled to beat the in-field, finding the long grass of the out-field as difficult to penetrate as Kintore had. However, the pair stuck to the task, and kept to a scoring rate of 2 per over for the first 15 overs, but a “quick” single called for by Mackie resulted in Dalton suffering a pulled muscle, and having to retire hurt for treatment. Within no time at all, Ellon had fallen to 44-4 off 21 overs, the result of steady bowling, and poor decision making by the batsmen – Mackie (run out 12), Neil Smith (bowled 3), Owen (run out 1), and Palmer (bowled 6).

With the guts of Ellons attack removed, Kintore started experimenting with their bowling attack , and succeeded in restricting Ellon to little more than 2 per over after 30 overs. Dalton resumed his efforts, with the aid of a “runner”, but they soon lost the plot and had Sam Wade run out. Young Craig White batted with great skill and determination for his 11 runs, and was unlucky to be dismissed by a fantastic diving catch by the ageing J Whale. Lawrence Meikle and Ross Wade did their best to revive hopes, but not even they could expect to alter the course of the match  - the score stood at 90 for 5 off 36 overs – 56 off 4 overs was asking just a little too much. They tried their best, with the help of Gary Dawson (run out number 4 of the innings) and Alan Mckean, and the proceedings came to a close with the score on 111 for 9.

Ellon entertain Dunecht 2nd XI at the Gordon Park this weekend, in the league.
