Ellon in too many runs shocker!!

On a typical wet, damp cricketing day Ellon went into battle with a reasonably strong side.

Captain Huw Owen decided to open the innings with last years batting hero Ean Mackie and Neil Smith.  Both stuck to their task and Smith was starting to find some rhythm but unfortunately he tried to go for a big shot too early in his innings and he was caught at cover for a well played for 19.

Owen joined Mackie and the pair put on 98 runs in 22 overs.  They were nudging the ball into the gaps and could have done this no problems all afternoon but they decided to try and push the scoring along and Owen just missed out on his second half century of the season when he was well caught at deep fine leg by Lewis.

Master Blaster came to the crease with the instructions of pushing the score along so he obeyed his captains orders by scoring 10 from the first over that he faced including a huge maximum over square leg.  A couple of overs he repeated this effort from an attempted slower ball this time it went over mid on.  While the blasting was going on Mackie was caught at square leg when he got an edge to the ball which he was trying to turn behind square but he batted well for his 39.  Lawrence Meikle replaced Mackie.

Watson was out about an over later when he was clean bowled attempting another slog but quickly acquired 23 runs.  Graeme Fraser joined Meikle but by this time all batsmen were attempting crazy shots to push the scoring along.

Meikle was caught by Tomlinson which brought Steve Palmer to the wicket and he and Fraser had some funny slipping and sliding between the wicket.  Fraser was next to go when he and Palmer tried to run a needless 3.

Gordon Smith joined Palmer to play out the remaining over before the declaration.  Overall this was an excellent batting display by Ellon although the late run of wickets could easily have been avoided.

After tea is was clear in the early overs that Grammar had no intention of chasing Ellons total as there was a total lack of urgency in their approach to the game.  However Ellon did get an early breakthrough by Alec Campbell when he bowled Johnson with a beautiful delivery which cut back in.

This was the last success that Ellon had for a while and captain Owen juggled his bowlers to try and get a breakthrough but this was not looking likely.  Although a couple of chances were offered they were few and far between but i can tell you that the fielder in question should have done better (yes but i had sore hands after the 1st one!!)  Eventually Ellon picked up the second wicket of the day when Carl Celedin chipped the ball of Owen at Mid On from the bowling of Steve Burford for a fine 50.

Ian Hopkin batted well for Grammar for his 51 not out and if it was not for him there could easily have been a different result on the day.  Pick of the bowlers was probably Burford who bowled really well as his figures show with only 17 runs comming from his 8 overs.
