Stonehaven Thistle v Ellon Gordon ‘Penna’
Ellon Gordon ‘Penna’ Cricket Club travelled to Stonehaven with 6 regular first team players unavailable. This gave the opportunity for 12 year old Sam Barrett to join his father and grandfather in the 1st XI for the first time. This is surely a record for the club. Unfortunately that is the only special mention Ellon deserve out of this dismal effort in the glorious sunshine at Stonehaven. Ellon lost the toss and were put in to bat. Jonathan Barrett came in with the score on 9 for 1 and hit five fours off his first six scoring shots to make the score begin to look respectful. Chris Watson was supporting him well but was pole-axed by a very nasty blow to the side of his head and the game was held up for several minutes while he received attention. The event and the delay seemed to unsettle Jonathan and he was out caught soon afterwards having scored 38 runs out of a total of 67. Chis Watson battled on bravely for 10 runs. This was followed by Ellon’s familiar batting collapse with the middle order and tail only contributing a further 16 runs and Ross Wade & Sam Barrett scored 8 of those between them. Ellon ended their innings with a meagre total of 83 for Stonehaven to chase.
Stonehaven’s reply began with a shock when Ross Wade cleaned bowled their opening batsman with his second ball. Stonehaven soon recovered from this blow and the result never looked in doubt with Ashley Morton and Chris Myers striking the ball to the boundary with ease. Ross Wade still continued to bowl well and Frankie Francis was unlucky not to take a wicket. Chris Watson was Ellon’s only other wicket taker trapping Chris Myers Lbw with the score on 55. After that Stonehaven passed Ellon’s score having used only 16 overs.
With a huge bump and bruise to the side of his head, Chris Watson will be the only Ellon player that will have any reason to remember this game and it will be for the wrong reasons.
Next Saturday (19th July) Ellon 1st XI
entertain Bon Accord at Gordon Park and will be looking for a better performance
from the batsmen. The second team play away against Grade 4 leaders
Methlick.
