St. Ronald’s versus Ellon Gordon ‘Penna’

Ellon Gordon ‘Penna’ Cricket Club travelled to Woodside for a Grade 1 match against St. Ronald’s  It was a beautiful day, a hard wicket and perfect conditions for cricket. Scott Middleton won the toss and elected to field first.  But – that was as good as it got.  The old maxim that ‘Catches win matches’ came to the fore and it was a case of ‘If Only’.  If only Ellon had held their catches the end result may have been a different story.  St. Ronald’s opening batsman, Alex Keith, was dropped off Steve Anderson’s fifth ball when he only had 8 runs against his name.  He went on to score a huge 209 runs not out, including 36 fours and 5 sixes.  It was a tremendous innings unless you were an Ellon bowler or fielder.  His opening colleague, 17 year old Kenny Reid, was dropped three times before he was finally held in the deep by Chris Watson having scored 42 and shared an opening stand of 170.  The dropped or missed catches continued while St. Ronald’s built up an incredible total of 313 runs for 5 wickets declared off only 40 overs.  Jonathan Barrett brought some light relief to the Ellon team by taking a hatrick in the final over.  The first was a brilliant catch by himself off his own bowling.  He then clean bowled Murchie before trapping his third victim, Pattenwien, Lbw.  St. Ronald’s declaration sent Ellon in to tea reflecting on many missed chances and considering how they would reply to such a large total.

St. Ronald’s 313 (A. Keith 209 N.O.; K Reid 42; D Miller 32)

Ellon’s Bowling.  S Anderson 9 overs, 1 maiden, 1 wicket for 59 runs.

                              S Middleton 13 overs, 2 maidens, 0 wickets for 87 runs

                              J Barrett    13 overs, 1 maiden, 3 wickets for 89 runs

Disaster struck in the first ball of Ellon’s innings when Andy Churchill played a reckless shot and was clean bowled.  In form batsman, Steve Anderson, was joined by Jon Barrett and they set about picking up the pieces.  Things were looking good when they brought the score up to 50 off 10 overs but then Barrett fell to a brilliant caught and bowled by Scott White for 13 runs.  Steve Anderson continued to score freely and looked in no trouble.  Scott Middleton shared a stand of 30 with him before being caught but after that only Gordon McNeil with a patient 20 and Ian Duncan with 14 (one 6 and 2 fours) reached double figures.  Steve Anderson was eventually beaten by a “wrong ‘un” from spinner Camilliri and was bowled for an excellent score of 93 just when it looked as though he would complete his third century of the season.  Ellon’s final total was 171 all out - achieving 15 points but losing the game by 142 runs.

The Ellon players need to brush up on their catching a fielding if they hope to achieve a positive result in the last two weeks of the season.

Next weekend (Saturday 23rd August) Ellon, sponsored by Penna Consultancy, entertain Banchory at Gordon Park for the last Grade 1 match of the season.
