Anderson and Reid Destroy Queens Cross
Ellon travelled to Harlaw for the 1st league fixture of the season. Jon Barrett led the side with Scott Middleton being unavailable. Ellon welcomed new signing Frank Francis into the team. On losing the toss Ellon were asked to bat.
Andy Churchill and Charlie Reid opened the innings and Churchill was certainly looking the most comfortable of the pair and was scoring freely. Just as Churchill was getting going he was caught when trying to push the score along.
In came Jon Barrett but he never got going like we all know he is capable and he was bowled off his pads.
Steve Anderson joined Reid at the wicket. Anderson took a while to get going but this was mostly due to the terrible state of the wicket. The pair put on 45 runs, the highest partnership of the Ellon innings until Reid was LBW.
Chris Watson came to the crease and did not look comfortable. At the other end Anderson was in full stride hitting the bowlers to all parts of the ground with a wide range of shots. Watson was out in the 36th over.
As Ellon had plenty of wickets in hand the batsmen had licence to play their shots and Ellon lost a few wickets in the process. Steve Reid, Ken Montgomery and Andy Parks all came and played a few nice shots before getting out.
Steve Anderson was eventually out for 77. This was an excellent innings in spite of the conditions. Hopefully this is the sign of things to come for this season as Steve has proved on numerious occasions that he is a match winner either with the bat or ball.
Gordon McNeil and Frank Francis finished off the innings. Frank in particular hit a massive 6 over square leg to the delight of his team mates on the boundary. Ellon closed their innings on 137 for 8 from 43 overs.
Ellon knew they had to make an early breakthrough to remove the stubborn Queens Cross batsmen and Steve Reid and Ross Wade opened the bowling attack.
It did not take long for Reid to make an immediate impact having Shepherd caught at slip by Barrett off only his 3rd ball.
In Reid’s next over he picked up a couple of wickets when he had Hutton caught at short leg by Andy Parks then next ball he had Kazi caught by Andy Churchill off another short pitched delivery. Queens Cross were reeling at 4 for 3 off 3 overs.
Wade got into the action when he had Boyd LBW now with Queens Cross at 19 for 4.
A revival was led by Buchanan and Merry as the pair put on 45 runs in spite of some excellent bowling. Barrett rotated his bowlers by bringing on Frank Francis, Steve Anderson and Chris Watson to try and get a breakthrough.
It was Barrett himself that got the breakthrough when he bowled Buchanan with a big spinning leg break.
Reid was brought back into the attack to try and knock over the remaining batsmen and he caught and bowled Adrian Merry and he bowled Murphy with a ball that was simply too quick for him.
Gavin Jamieson and Rory Taylor looked to
be heading toward the draw until Taylor could not resist Barrett’s bowling
and he lobbed a catch to Steve Anderson at Mid Off. Barrett bamboozled
Jamieson which resulted in Andy Churchill picking up a stumping.
Norri and Robin Taylor only had a couple
of overs to survive but they could not manage this against the determined
Ellon bowling. Reid picked up the final wicket when he bowled Robin
Taylor with only 8 balls remaining in the match.
Ellon entertain Academy next weekend at Gordon Park knowing a similar performance will be required to win. Scott Middleton will come back into the team with Jon Barrett, Andy Churchill and Gordon McNeil all missing out.
