Ellon Gordon “Penna” Cricket Club enjoyed a pre-season tour at Barrow-in-Furness in the Lake District last weekend. It was very satisfying to play cricket on hard open grounds in beautiful surroundings in lovely spring sunshine.
The first match was on Saturday 12th April against Furness. Furness won the toss and elected to bat first and proceeded to give the visiting side a lesson in class batting. It has to be said that Ellon’s ground fielding and catching left a lot to be desired and they found it difficult to cope with the fast outfield. The pick of the Ellon bowlers were Stephen Reid and Jonathan Barrett. Stephen had early success with a beautiful ball that clean-bowled opening batsman J. Wild. This was to bring in the ex Indian Test play, Alan Sippy, who scored a quick fire 50 off ten overs. Sippy gracefully retired on 51 (gratefully for Ellon) to give other Furness players some batting practice and they accumulated 242 runs off the allotted 40 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets. Jonathan Barrett’s leg spin bowling did cause the batsmen some difficulty conceding only 22 runs off his 8 overs - but he was unable to take a wicket.
In their reply Ellon lost the wicket of Charlie Reid in the third over, but Andy Churchill & Jonathan Barrett attacked the bowling with some enthusiasm enjoying the conditions. Steve Anderson also batted well hitting two handsome 4’s off Alan Sippy’s bowling. Unfortunately wickets fell regularly and Ellon could only score 111 runs against this very competent fielding and bowling side.
On the bright side a team from the Ellon contingent won the quiz night in the evening.
