Minus four key players Ellon Gordon ‘Penna’ Cricket Club entertained Stonehaven at Gordon Park on Saturday 10th May for a game they expected to win.
Stonehaven batted first and struggled against some fine bowling and fielding by the home side. Ross Wade bowled opening batsman Morton with an unplayable delivery. The other bowlers were assisted by some excellent catching. The take by Kenny Hutcheson on the deep long-on boundary was an exceptional catch off Jonathan Barrett’s bowling, dismissing danger man Hinchcliffe for Stonehaven’s top score of 33. Another superb catch was the one taken by skipper Scott Middleton at mid-on off the bowling of Chris Watson. The tail put up little resistance against the bowling of Watson and Barrett each taking three wickets, the latter conceding only 18 runs off his 15 overs. The ground fielding of Gordon McNeil was first class and he was responsible for the other two wickets to fall with run-outs. Stonehaven completed their innings with a total of 105 runs off 45 overs.
After an enjoyable tea supplied by the Station Hotel the home side set about their reply. They lost Charlie Reid and newcomer Ali Raja with only five runs on the Scoreboard, which brought Jonathan Barrett to the wicket with Kenny Montgomery.
Both began cautiously after such a poor start. Gradually they began to master the bowling and began to score runs. Barrett was scoring freely and they had taken the score up to 45 before a ball, that kept very low, bowled Mondgomery. Barrett continued pushing the score up, scoring 16 runs off two overs before he, too, was bowled for a personal score of 46 with the total at 66. This signalled a major batting collapse and the last six wickets fell for only 10 runs off the bat. 21 ’extras’ was the second highest score in Ellon’s innings, which ended with only 84 runs in the book and a very disappointing loss of their 100% record.
Ellon Gordon ‘Penna’ are a top side in the field but now they must improve their batting and not rely on a few players to score all the runs.
Next Saturday Ellon travel to Bon Accord
at the Links in Aberdeen and will have to perform much better to get maximum
points
