Ellon Snatch Defeat From The Jaws Of Victory
Ellon played Banchory in the Turriff Cup semi final at Gordon Park on Sunday. Steve Anderson led the Ellon side for the first time.
Ellon got off to a stuttering start losing Ken Montgomery early on. Jon Barrett came in and battered 3 boundrys before being bowled. Steve Anderson joined Steve Dalton and the pair but the Ellon innings back on track.
With the score on 53 for 2 Dalton was trapped on the crease and was given LBW. Chris Watson was bowled and Steve Reid hit his own wicket in comical fashion to leave the innings floundering at 66 for 5.
Craig White joined his captain and White displayed all of his massive potential to stay with his captain for 10 overs while Anderson kept the scoreboard ticking over.
Greg Rees came to join Anderson although it was Rees who took the attack to the Banchory bowlers hitting 3 quick boundrys to give the Ellon innings some momentum. Unfortunately for Ellon Rees was bowled for 15.
Lawrence Meikle joined Anderson but he could not stay with him for long as he was bowled.
The experianced Heydon Barrett joined Anderson. Anderson went into overdrive now hitting anything and everything out of the ground. This was by far the largest partnership of the Ellon innings with Anderson dispatching all bowlers around Gordon Park. Anderson brought up his 50 with a huge 6 over the mid wicket boundry.
Unfortunately for Heydon he was sacraficed to get Anderson back on strike. New batsman Tyson Dunz strode to the wicket and in the process told Anderson that he needed another 7 runs to get to his 100. With this news Anderson smashed another 6 and a 4 to bring his ton up in style! Ellon’s innings closed on 180 for 9 from 40 overs. Anderson brilliant 103 not out includded 10 * 4’s and 6 * 6’s.
Ellon knew the task in hand and Stephen Reid picked up a wicket in his 4th over by bowling Brown with a sharp delivery.
Herbert joined Tim Donald and the talented youngster was obviously uneasy trying to bat against Reid’s pace. Reid softened him up then Barrett had him caught by Montgomery at silly point.
Banchory were struggling at 26 for 2 before Donald started to attack the Ellon bowling.
Anderson brought himself and Ken Montgomery on to try and add some pressure. Unfortunately they did not pick up any wickets.
Chris Watson was introduced and immediately picked up a wicket having Beddie caught by Reid at Mid Off.
The pressure was starting to tell with the runs drying up at one end so the Banchory batsmen decided to try and attack Montgomery. Donald hit 16 from Montgomery’s 4th over.
Watson continued to build pressure and when he had MacPherson LBW then bowled Wilkinson a few overs later Banchorys chances were starting to fade. Watson finished his spell of 8 overs 3 for 24.
Pennington joined Donald and Donald took it upon himself to take the game to Ellon and that is exactly what he did. With the score on 122 for 6 these batsmen saw their team home to the total of 184. Although the batsmen were made to struggle they made it home with 2 balls to spare.
Again it was clear that the fielding let
the side down with a few catches which were not held and the ground fielding
was woefull. The result should not take the gloss off a fantastic
batting display by Steve Anderson who took the attack to the opposition.
