Ellon teach Academy a Lesson

Despite persistent rain through the week it was not enough to stop Ellon getting a game against Gordon Park at the weekend.  Thanks to a lot of hard work from Andy Parks the wicket was playable.  Captain Scott Middleton returned to lead the team and he won the toss and asked Academy to bat.

Ellon opened the bowling with Steven Reid and Ross Wade.  With the bowlers not getting a lot of assistance from the pitch Frank Francis and Steve Anderson were introduced into the attack.

Ellon’s fielding was responsible for picking up the 1st wicket with Anderson running McGhee out with a direct hit.

Huisamen was the new batsmen but he did not last long when Anderson picked up his first wicket of the day when Huisamen miss-cued the ball to Wade at mid off.

Borstlap came to the wicket to replace his countryman and he decided to take the attack to the Ellon bowlers.  Despite being dropped first ball he went on to top score for Academy with 23 in only a few overs before Anderson had him caught by Jon Barrett on the boundary.

Derrett joined McLaughlin at the crease but it was not long before he was heading back to the pavilion after a brute of a delivery had him in trouble and he edged it to Frank Francis in the slips.

Clark joined McLaughlin but this time it was McLaughlin who was the next man out when he was beaten by an Anderson yorker.  This was Anderson’s 4th wicket of the day.

Steve Reid was brought back into the attack and he skittled out the rest of the Academy batsmen.  His pace was unplayable as he had Clark caught by Anderson.  Then he clean bowled Canale.

Jon Barrett picked up the wicket of Hutson before Reid finished off the innings by bowling Ken Matthew for 4.  The Academy innings closed on 78.

After a fine tea was provided by the Station Hotel, Ellon knew that the weather was closing in around them so they had to get on with business.  Scott Middleton decided to open the innings with himself and Andy Churchill to give the innings some imputes.

The Ellon innings got off to a solid start until Churchill was making his way back to the pavilion with severe cramp.  Churchill made 18 before he had to retire hurt.

Jon Barrett came in to join his skipper but Scott tried to smash a decent delivery out of the ground and was clean bowled.

Last weeks batting hero Steve Anderson joined Barrett and the pair put on 29 runs before Anderson was caught at Mid Off.
Charlie Reid joined Barrett and Reid stole the glory from Barrett by hitting the winning runs.

The win takes Ellon to the top of the league!  Ellon entertain Stonehaven at Gordon Park next Saturday knowing a similar performance will be required.  Ellon are going to be without 3 key players next week as Steve Reid is going to be missing for the next 5 weeks as he is touring Australia, Andy Churchill is away offshore and Steve Anderson is unavailable.
