Banchory win in tight finish
By Chris the Cricketing Correspondent
Ellon were on their travels this week with Banchory the opposition. Ellon were weakened with the news that Jon Barrett and Steve Anderson were not available.
On losing the toss Ellon were asked to bat so Andy Churchill and Charlie Reid pulled on the pads and went out to score some runs.
Too everyone’s surprise this went according to plan! In particular Churchill was looking very impressive and Reid was not too bad either! Both batsmen were putting away the bad ball and deservedly got some luck on their way. The Banchory bowlers were starting to lose belief and lost all confidence in their bowling, wides after wides were being bowled helping the score mount.
With the partnership on 115 from 32 overs, Reid played a loose shot and was caught by Edge for 34. It was good to see Reid back scoring runs again and hopefully he can continue in this vein for the rest of the season.
Banchory were lifted when they picked up a wicket and struck again almost immediately. After reaching his 50 Andy Churchill was bowled by former Ellon player Brett Howard.
Andy Parks and Scott Middleton were at the crease now and with licence to play some shots Middleton picked out Howard in the deep and the fielder took a good catch to dismiss his former skipper.
Chris Watson joined Andy Parks and they got the innings back on track with a small but vital partnership of 30 runs. Parks was bowled by Howard when he was trying to hit the ball out of the ground.
Watson was the next man out with the score on 156, in his brief innings which included a big 6 over square leg he was caught at point for 16.
Steve Reid and Kenny Hutcheson were together at the wicket and the pair were running plenty of quick singles before Reid edged a delivery to MacPherson who held onto the catch at the second attempt.
Frank Francis and Hutcheson finished off the innings with Francis hitting a typically belligerent 4. The Ellon innings closed on 172 with everyone assuming that the score would be enough with the strength of Ellons’ bowling attack.
Opening bowlers Steve Reid and Frank Francis got Ellon off to a perfect start. Reid had Donald caught at short leg by Andy Parks for a duck. In the next over Francis had Edge caught at point by Charlie Reid also for 0 then in Reids’ next over he had Potter caught by Watson at square leg.
Banchory were in dire straights with the score on 6 for 3 but then Malcolm Elder and Jerry Donaldson. The pair put away the bad ball but with the score on 60 Elder played a loose shot and was well caught by Andy Churchill who made good ground to his right before taking the catch off the bowling of Francis for 32.
Matt MacPherson joined in where Elder left the batsmen kept the runs pileing on before Donaldson was caught by Parks off the bowling of Reid for 43. The game was still even at this moment in time but Ross Wade picked up the wicket of the experienced batsman Tim Wilkinson for a golden duck thanks to a wonderful diving catch by Stephen Doak behind the stumps.
Lewis Beddie and MacPherson were punishing the wayward bowling of Ross Wade so he was taken off in favour of Chris Watson. Still with the game on a knife-edge Watson had Beddie caught by Parks at mid wicket then a couple of overs later he had MacPherson leg before wicket.
Banchory required 30 runs to win with only 2 wickets remaining, both batsmen Howard and Deeming looked determined not to let the bowlers pick up the necessary wickets.
Watson was taken off by his captain with Ellon striving to pick up a much needed win but in his over Middleton went for 12 runs which all but handed the game to Banchory.
Banchory made it home with 2 wickets remaining. The Ellon players were disappointed after they put in such a good all-round performance. At least there were many positives to be taken from the game including the batting of Churchill and Charlie Reid and the bowling of Steve Reid, Francis and Watson.
Ellon host relegation contenders Queens
Cross at Gordon Park next Saturday, hopefully Queens Cross will be on their
best behaviour after recent punch ups making the wrong headlines in the
papers and you never know the council might cut our outfield before the
next game!
