Ellon 2nd XI vs Stonehaven 2nd XI
Saturday 12th July 2003
The crunch game for Ellon’s Grade 4 side looked as though it might not take place at all due to a severe lack of players – over 20 regular club members were unavailable last week, which resulted in several “retired” individuals being harassed into playing, although Scott Middleton was able to provide some relief, playing for some two hours.
Ellon invited the opposition to bat first, and Middleton opened the bowling with Huw Owen. Middleton drew first blood, enticing Steve Crozier into playing a slow wide delivery back onto his stumps. He got his next victim 8 balls later, fellow opener N Hutchison clean bowled – 37 for 2. The two bowlers restricted Stonehaven to around 3 runs per over, and Middleton took his third victim, Mark Smith, caught by Owen for 9, and his fourth and final wicket two overs later, Ben Newell, caught and bowled for 10, to finish with figures of 4 for 28 off 13 overs – at which point he and his “new recruit” had to leave for the day, leaving only 9 players to continue.
Unfortunately for Ellon, young David Crozier had been at the crease a good while at this point, and along with the more experienced Bruce Findlay they found the new bowling attack more to their liking, and also found the plentiful gaps in the field. This pair pushed the score from 79 to 171 for 4 by the 38th over, until Ali Raja trapped Findlay LBW for 40.Young Crozier went on to make 72 not out in a total of 195 for 5.
Ean Mackie opened the batting along with newcomer Neville Robson. With a target of 4.08 per over to win, they set off at a perfect pace, punishing any loose delivery most severely : 38 off 9 overs (4.22 per over). Robson lost his dual with mid off in the 10th over, and was out caught for a fine 15 runs.
Stonehaven then introduced Nigel King into the attack – he removed Mackie and Greg Rees in his first over, then Ali Raja and Ian Campbell in his next over – leaving Owen and Neil Allanach the prospect of batting for 34 overs and scoring 142 to win at 4.17 per over.
Owen appeared to forget all about his responsibilities during the 17th over when he chased a wide leg side delivery, only to snick it to the diving wicket keeper. The Rev. Alan Mckean was next to fall victim to King – his 6th wicket, contained within 3 double wicket maidens.
Hopes of a revival were now in the hands of Allanach and two of Ellon’s younger members – first up, Martin Buchan who failed to deal with D Croziers spin, and then 9 year old Finlay Owen who had already fielded very well, batting for his first time in a competitive game found the occasion a bit too nerve racking, with 8 fielders surrounding the bat, Finlay too was unable to make contact with a vicious spinning delivery from Crozier, and that was that!
Ellon were all out for 64.
