“THE HUTCH DESTROYS DUNECHT”
ELLON 2nd XI vs DUNECHT 2nd XI
Saturday 5th July 2003 Grade 4 League
Fixture
Ellon’s continued bid to accompany Methlick into Grade 3 next season was boosted at the week-end by a relatively comfortable win against struggling Dunecht.
Ellon were put into bat and opener Iain Robertson (29) hit the first delivery for 4 – his next two scoring shots were also 4’s, laying bare Ellon’s intent of posting a high score quickly. Four of the other top order tried to follow Robbo’s lead, but perished playing very silly shots – Huw Owen (5), Gordon Smith (8) including a splendid 6, Kenny Hutcheson (8), and Ian Duncan (3). Fortunately, the “high flying” man fae Auchnagatt, Lawrence Meikle joined his wee village compatriot at the crease, and promptly blasted 20 runs off 5 deliveries – then got bowled! Robertson’s was the only unfortunate wicket, catching a thickish inside edge off a fairly wide delivery.
Sense and sensibility were soon restored when Ean Mackie joined Steve Dalton at the crease. Previously known as a stubborn opening partnership, the lively pair were soon showing everybody that a bit of experience can often be as useful as raw power, and they kept the Dunecht field alert to the end – knowing that a declaration was imminent, both Ean and Steve contrived to record unbeaten half centuries (54) and (50) respectively – a fantastic 99 run 7th wicket stand – get the record books out Mr Statto.
Ellon declared their innings on 196 for 6 off 43 overs.
Following yet another sumptuous tea provided by the Station Hotel, Ellon’s bowling attack of Ali Raja and Greg Rees had their work cut out to withstand the bludgeoning assault of D Salisbury – another Kiwi to grace the Gordon Park – anything slightly wide was given the treatment, and Greg certainly held a good line to curtail the onslaught. Fellow opener Saha Aslam (Scotland U21 international) looked assured against Ali’s pacier attack, but foolishly thought a “quick” single was on after guiding the ball to THE HUTCH – strike one.
Greg Rees’s efforts were eventually rewarded
with the wicket of Salisbury, and then Mackie stumped a “wandering Walden”
off the bowling of Owen.
Following this point, THE HUTCH took over
– caught a screamer at mid-on off Owen (strike 2); had the dangerous McBurnie
caught by Dalton at point (strike 3); an edge to 2nd slip held brilliantly
by Meikle (strike 4); was far too quick for Aldhouse Junior – caught by
Duncan at short mid-wicket (strike 5); lulled the young Amir Aslam into
a rash slog – Dalton combining again at cover point (strike 6); gave Dalton
his hat-trick of catches, getting Aldhous Senior (strike 7); and the cherry
on top of this magnificent performance was STRIKE 8 – Dave Curry’s stumps
splayed all over the shop. If ever there was a way to answer your critics,
this was it – Kenny “The Hutch” Hutcheson bowled with controlled venom,
and finished the day with 6 for 25 off 8.2
overs.
Dunecht’s score was 116 all out off 37.2
overs.
Ellon were awarded 30 points for the outright
win, whilst Dunecht picked up 13 points.
