Ellon 2nd XI visited Dunecht on Saturday to compete in Round One of the Johnstone Cup. Having travelled through torrential rain (and hail) few believed a game of cricket possible – the Dunecht team were so reluctant to get their jumpers damp that they took until 2.00pm to take the field.
When the game finally got under way, Ellon’s opening batsmen had to contend with the pace bowling of Simon Roberts (called into the 2nd team as a result of Dunechts 1st team game being called off). Although he took no wickets, the batsmen found it difficult to score any runs off him, and he bowled 7 overs for only 11 runs.
Consequently all 3 top order batsmen tried to attack the other bowler, and all 3 failed, resulting in a score of 10 for 3 off 8 overs. Fortunately, Craig White and Drew Drummond joined forces and showed the others how to bat – Craig played Roberts’ quick stuff with supreme grace and confidence, whilst Drummond held court at the other end, blasting Fellowes all over the park. Together they added 38 to the score, before Drummond was bowled, and finally White was very unlucky to be caught by the wicket-keeper.
The only other notable batsman was Alistair Mustoe, who came in at No.9 and showed that he is really benefiting from continued coaching at the club – playing glorious cover drives, along with some very “correct” defensive shots, Ali scored a well earned 8 runs, his highest for the senior team to date – both Ali and Craig have demonstrated over the last couple of weeks that youngsters can progress rapidly at the club – Craig will soon be opening the batting line up, according to the 2nd team captain, and on current form Ali wont be too far below him.
Ellon’s innings closed on 81 runs.
Dunecht opened proceeding with one aim it seemed – to win the game quickly. Both openers were happily swinging at almost every delivery, so it was no surprise when Owen clean bowled one of them in the 5th over. With the first ball of the next over, Greg Rees fooled the other one into playing a cover drive off a lifting delivery, and Ian Robertson took the catch.
Dunecht were now on 26 for 2 off 8 overs!
Unfortunately for Ellon, they weren’t able to take another wicket until the game was nearly over. Steve Brand picked off any loose deliveries and made 46 not out to give Dunecht a comfortable victory in the 28th over – Ian Robertson took the 3rd wicket, that of S Shaw who scored 2 in 20 overs – boring to watch perhaps, but a solid support to the more experienced Brand.
Ellon 2nd’ team have become adept at beating
the weather and getting games played against all odds – it is hoped that
they will soon start beating the opposition too!
May 31st is a “free” weekend so the next
fixture is at home against Gordonians on Saturday 7th June.
