Saints Stop Ellon Marching On

Ellon travelled to Woodside to play St Ronald on Saturday 27th July on an unusually sunny day.  On losing the toss Ellon were asked to bat so Captain Scott Middleton decided to open with Ken Montgomery and Neil Smith.

Disaster struck in the 1st over with Montgomery being caught behind off the bowling of Miller.  Jon Barrett replaced Montgomery but just as he was starting to find his feet at the crease he was caught behind this time off the bowling of Whyte.

Steve Anderson came to the crease knowing a lot of work had to be done and the South African master blaster soon finding his form in hitting Miller out of the ground for a maximum 6!

At the other end Smith was battling hard but was bowled by Miller but did well in surviving 12 overs before he was out.

The welcome arrival of Andy Churchill to the crease added some stability to the Ellon innings.  He knocked the ball into the gaps to allow Anderson to have the strike.  His partner was relishing his role and was hitting 6’s for fun.  In Millers 6th over Anderson blasted him out of the park twice in successive balls.

Just as the half-century was practically in Anderson’s grasp he was caught behind off the bowling of Alistair Mudie to bring to an exciting innings of 42, which included five 6’s.

Colin Addison came in and lasted a few overs keeping the scoreboard ticking over and using up the overs but when he was bowled by Whyte this started a mini collapse as Churchill was caught behind by Reid and Chris Watson was out the very next ball with Ellon’s score on 97 for 7.

Iain Robertson joined Scott Middleton and the pair knew they had a lot to do to repair the damage done in the previous couple of overs.  They batted very sensibly but knocking the ball into gaps to pick up the singles and when the bad ball came along it was hit to the boundary and on some occasions over it!  The pair lasted for 13 overs together and in the process put on 63 runs but Alec Keith suckered Middleton into playing over the top of a full toss and the powerful batsman was out for 40.

Tyson Dunz came to the crease with only a few overs to go before the end of the innings.  Unfortunately Robertson was caught when trying to push on the score and was out for a very valuable 18.

Ross Wade joined Dunz with only a few balls to go and he hit a quick fire 4 before leaving Dunz stranded after being bowled off the last ball of the innings.  Ellon’s innings closed on 168, which was a decent score considering the bad start and the middle order collapse.

Colin Addison opened the bowling with Steve Anderson and both bowlers knew early inroads would have to be made if Ellon were going to win.  Addison responded in style having one of the leagues most dangerous batsmen Alec Keith caught by Iain Robertson for a golden duck.

Anderson was next to pick up a wicket having St Ronald Captain Martin Murchie lbw and St Ronald were 15 for 2 off 4 overs.

Unfortunately Kenny Reid and Davie Miller batted well for 20 overs practically ending all chance of a win.  Eventually Scott Middleton had Reid caught at the second attempt by Addison at mid on.  The look on Addison’s face was priceless after taking the catch!

Duncan Camilleri came to the crease to join Miller and the pair stayed together for 6 overs this time before Addison picked up his 2nd wicket of the afternoon having Miller caught by Anderson.

Scott Whyte joined Camilleri and the pair shut up shop ensuring Ellon would not get any more joy from the match.  Middleton rotated his bowlers to try and pick up a wicket and even introduced the lob bowling of Churchill, which has proved so successful on the Tuesday nights but got no luck in the match!

Ellon travel to Duthie Park next Saturday to play Stoneywood/Dyce knowing full well that they will have to take their chances to pick up a vital win.
