Good end to disappointing season
By Chris the Cricketing Correspondent
Ellon travelled to Harlaw to play relegation threatened Queens Cross. On a soggy wicket which probably resembled a rugby pitch than a cricket pitch Brett Howard won the toss in the absence of Scott Middleton and decided to bat.
As Ellon were already clear of relegation Middleton tried to reshuffle his pack. Ellon got off to a disastrous start with Andy Churchill, Tyson Dunz and Gordon McNeil all making their way back to the pavilion with only 5 on the scoreboard.
Jon Barrett joined Scott Middleton and the pair went about rebuilding Ellons innings with the 2nd highest partnership of the match of 22. Before Middleton was caught behind for 9.
For 27 for 4 Ellon slumped to 36 for 7 with Barrett mistiming a shot off his legs, Iain Robertson just misjudged a full toss and Ross Wade was bowled round his bat.
Andy Parks joined Steve Anderson, Anderson was looking in fine form and used a great deal of concentration and sensible batting to keep the scoreboard ticking. When Parks was caught acrobatically at 2nd slip Brett Howard joined Anderson.
The pair batted for 13 overs and put together a match winning partnership of 49 for the 9th wicket. Howard was caught with the score on 94 so last man Chris Watson joined Anderson with plenty of overs remaining. Anderson decided to throw the bat at the ball and hit one of the biggest 6’s I’ve seen in my life! Unfortunately an over later Watson was caught and Ellon were 104 all out off 39 overs. Anderson finished on 51 not out which was a superb effort considering the conditions.
Captain Middleton viewed his options and decided to open the bowling with Steve Anderson and Chris Watson. From the offset Ellon set attacking fields with Andy Churchill and Andy Parks fielding close to the bat.
Both bowlers kept things tight from the word go with Watson bowling 6 straight maidens in a row! It was in the 12th over that Ellon gained the 1st breakthrough with Churchill taking a superb catch low down.
The fiery Ross Wade was introduced into the attack in the place of Anderson and his line and length was immaculate. He picked up the 2nd wicket as the result of an excellent catch by Middleton.
A few overs later Queens Cross were 3 down when Churchill was again in the thick of the action taking another astonishing catch off the bowling of Watson. It was the Watson and Churchill partnership that accounted for the next victim with Churchill taking a skier. Watson finished his astonishing spell with 3 wickets from 15 overs, which included 8 maidens.
Brett Howard was introduced and Anderson was brought back on, finally Anderson managed to produce a brute of a delivery to account for Grant Jamieson.
Howard picked up the next wicket when he deceived Merry into hitting the ball at Gordon “Mits” McNeil at point then Queens Cross were 54 for 6. Which soon became 57 for 7 when Anderson forced Gavin Jamieson to play onto his stumps.
The only real partnership that Queens Cross had was 18 runs between Buchan and Wright. Jon “Bubbles” Barrett was introduced and he picked up a wicket with his 6th ball when he had the former Boddam batsman Buchan lbw for 15.
With time running out Middleton played his trump card in reintroducing Wade, the youngster came charging in with ferocious pace which accounted for the last 2 batsmen. First Vikram gloved one to reliable hands of Barrett then Howard took a fine catch to dismiss last man Taylor and Ellon won with 7 balls to spare.
Despite a below par performance with the
bat the Ellon players more than made up for it in the field with some sparkling
performances. Without Andersons’ 51 Ellon would not have competed
but credit must also go to the youngsters Wade and Watson showing some
maturity well beyond their years.
