Methlick Murdered By Rampant Ellon

Captain Scott Middleton won the toss and decided to Bat.  He opened with his reliable partnership of Ken Montgomery and Charlie Reid

Both these batsmen did not disappoint their captain as the forged a decent opening partnership of 82 in 24 overs.  Only when Mike Bremaneson was brought into the attack did Methlick look like taking any wickets!!  Reid was bamboozled by Bremaneson and Tim Duffy took a decent catch on the square leg boundary.

Steve Palmer joined Montgomery and the pair batted sensibly but it was not long before Palmer was heading back to the pavilion.  Bremaneson spun the ball back “through the gate” and Palmer was out for 5.

Steve Reid came to the crease and was quickly in his stride.  Unfortunately for Methlick it was Mike Mitchell who was hit out of the attack with Reid hitting a 4 then a huge 6.  Bremaneson picked up his third wicket of the afternoon when he deceived Montgomery and he hit the ball to the waiting Mitchell on the boundary.  Montgomery batted well for 31.

Middleton replaced Montgomery but by this time Ellon were running out of time with plenty of wickets in hand so the order was to try and push on the scoring rate.  Unfortunately Bremaneson had other ideas picking up the wickets of Middleton and next man Chris Watson in his 5th over.  Ellon had quickly gone from112 for 2 to 122 for 5.

Andy Parks joined Reid and the pair put together a quick 10 run partnership before Parks missed a “straight one” from Graham Fletcher and was heading back to the pavilion for 4.

Tyson Dunz did not waste anytime at the crease.  It was alleged that he spent more time putting his kit on than playing at the middle.  When he was bowled 1st ball by Fletcher.

Alistair Mustoe came on the face the hat-trick ball from Fletcher but he had no problems dealing with it.  Mustoe was unfortunately bowled by veteran Colin Addison without troubling the scorers.

Kenny Hutcheson joined Reid and the pair were using their speed to push the quick singles but Hutcheson was run out attempting a risky single.

Last batsman Ross Wade came to the crease to join Reid and hit a nice square cut before becoming Fletchers 3rd wicket of the Day.

The Ellon innings closed on 149, which was accepted as a fairly decent total considering the pitch and outfield conditions.

After a fine tea provided by the Station Hotel, Ellon took the field knowing they would have to be at their best to bowl out the challengers.
Steven Reid and Scott Middleton ripped through the top of the Methlick batting order.  Middleton picked up his 1st victim of the day when Graham Kidd was bowled in only the 2nd over of the innings for 1.

Lord Haddo came to the crease but Ackerley was the next batsman to go when he was clean bowled by Reid for 0.

Tim Duffy joined Haddo but did not hang around and was bowled when trying to slog Middleton and completely missed the ball and actually looked quite stupid in the process.

Graham Fletcher joined Haddo and despite Haddo looking good for the couple of balls that he faced he played an ugly shot and was bowled by Reid.

Methlicks’ total was 9 runs with 4 wickets already but a good partnership between Mike Bremaneson and Fletcher.  Ellon rotated their bowlers to try and break this partnership and Ross Wade and Ken Montgomery were introduced to do this.

Despite having a good shout for a run out turned down and various LBW’s turned down there was no doubt when Andy Parks finally ran out Bremaneson for 24.  There is a recurring joke about Bremaneson’s running between the wicket and this was demonstrated again.

Colin Addison joined Fletcher and soon was up to his usual tricks to upset the fielding side.  Wade was the next Ellon bowled to get success when he had Fletcher easily caught behind by Tyson Dunz.  Despite this being a regulation dismissal Fletcher did not walk and the interesting umpiring style of Bevan taking an age to raise his finger!

This wicker signalled the end for Methlick, Mike Mitchell was the next man in but it was not long before he was heading home.  Ken Montgomery picked up his first wicket of the day having Mitchell LBW to Ellon’s surprise, as they did not think the umpires knew the meaning of the rule!!

Despite Addison hitting a quick fire 18 he became Montgomery’s 2nd wicket of the afternoon when he tried to “swing across the line” was well outthought by Montgomery.

By now the end was near so Middleton introduced Kenny Hutcheson and Chris Watson to the attack.  Hutcheon responded by picking up the wickets of Roger Bevan and David Rosie.  Hutcheson was disappointed to bowl a wide and finished with figures of 2 for 1.  Methlick were dismissed for 77.

Ellon’s superiority was clear for all to see and totally outclassed Methlick with their all round ability.  Skipper Middleton was proud of his troops and it might be a few weeks before turncoat Colin Addison lives this result down!
