Cults Crush Ellon
On losing the toss Ellon were asked to bat by Cults captain Graeme Gillanders. Andy Churchill and Charlie Reid were the Ellon opening pair.
Unfortunately for Ellon the innings got off to the worst possible start when Churchill was bowled by Paul Upjohn for 3.
Jonny Barrett joined Reid and was looking in good touch from where he left off the previous week. Just as Reid was starting to get used to the wicket he got a brute of a delivery from Davie Meres and umpire Ally Reid had to alternative to give the youngster out LBW.
Next man in was Brett Howard who despite looked solid in defence was struggling to get the ball off the square and it came as no surprise when he was bowled by Upjohn for 0. Howard is going through a bad run of form at the moment but will surely overcome this in the next few weeks!
Ken Montgomery replaced Howard and decided to play the sensible support man role for Ellon as he decided to keep Barrett company for the forthcoming overs.
The pair added 32 for the 4th wicket with Barrett scoring the majority of the runs before Meres bowled him on 45 with yet another half century just around the corner.
Skipper Scott Middleton joined Montgomery and smashed a beautiful 6 off the bowling of Neil Gillanders but then was out in the next over attempting to hit another off the bowling of Hamish MacDougal and Dave Alexander took a good catch on the boundary.
Steve Reid came to the wicket to replace Middleton and looked in good touch but Montgomery was caught at mid wicket while trying to push the score on so Andy Parks replaced him.
Unfortunately Parks and Reid crashed into each other when attempting to complete a second runs. Parks came off worse and at the time it was thought that he had a broken nose and a fractured cheekbone! He went straight to Accident and Emergency to find out the full extent of his injuries.
Colin Addison took the place of Parks and he played sensibly allowing Reid to have the majority of the strike The pair put on 39 for the 8th wicket before Reid attempted to smash another boundary and was bowled for a superb 47.
Watson joined Addison for the final couple of overs but unfortunately for Ellon Addison was bowled by Pete Winefield and Tyson Dunz was bowled soon after to end the Ellon innings on 139.
After a lovely tea provided by the Station Hotel and the strawberries purchased by Andy Churchill, Ellon took the field knowing they had to make early inroads into the Cults batting line up to have a chance of gaining a victory.
The opening partnership of Brian Alexander and Davie Meres appeared to have put Cults into the Semi Final. Middleton rotated his bowlers in the hope of gaining the much-needed wicket. Colin Addison and Steve Reid had the 1st chances but luck was not on their side and chances did not go to hand.
Middleton tried himself and Jon Barrett and it was evident that the spin of Barrett was troubling the Cults batsmen. Seeing this Middleton took himself off in place of off-spinner Chris Watson. Immediately Watson picked up a wicket with only his 6th ball when Ken Montgomery took a regulation catch at slip to dismiss the Meres for 56.
By this stage the game as a contest was over thanks to a 107 opening stand with only 43 needed for victory so Ellon were playing for pride. It was Watson again who took the next wicket when he had Winefield leg before wicket when he misjudged a long hop.
Jon Barrett was now playing catch up and he deceived Alexander who looped the ball in the air and the awaiting Andy Churchill made up some ground to reach it. There was still time for another wicket and this time Barrett deceived Trevor Mutch in the flight and he was bowled for 1.
Paul Upjohn and Graeme Gillanders finished off the game without any major scares. Ellon travel to Woodside to play St Ronald next Saturday in the league.
