Pouring Rain Dashes Hopes Of Win

On a cloudy Saturday afternoon at the Links, Ellon openers Churchill and C Reid went out to open the batting against Bon Accord after their skipper had lost the toss.  A shaky start meant that the score was only 17 before the first wicket fell with C Reid being caught behind off of the impressive bowling of Mirza for only 3 runs.

Next to the crease came the in form Barrett who, along with Churchill, put on a 41 run partnership thanks to some exciting stroke play.  Unfortunately the partnership was broken after a smart piece of fielding by Bon Accord who ran out Barrett for 26 runs.

Next on the scene came Anderson but the partnership was abruptly ended when Churchill was clean bowled by Mirza for 20.

Howard joined Anderson next but only managed 1 for his troubles and was sent packing after being caught behind off of Malik’s bowling.

New face Kerry Williams entered the arena next and what an impact he made.  Some quite exquisite stroke play and explosive hitting along with Anderson at the other end brought the score along nicely.  However after a 57 partnership Anderson succumbed to Ahmed’s slow pace and was bowled for an innings of 40, which included 4x4’s and 2x6’s.

Skipper Middleton joined Williams and they put together a 46 run partnership before Middleton was bowled by Ahmed.  S Reid came to the crease next and hit 11 before being dismissed.  Addison contributed a further 1 before Robertson finished the Ellon innings off on 218 for 8, with 7 not out and man of the match Williams finished on 73 not out, to cap a wonderful debut (7x4’s and 3x6’s).

After tea Addison and Anderson opened the bowling and their tight bowling was rewarded after only 5 overs when Anderson bowled Meres with a beautiful in-swinging delivery.

The explosive Mirza quickly followed being adjudged to have scraped the ball to wicket keeper Dunz.

Awan was deployed next by skipper Ahmed and he along with Brown put together a 26 run partnership before Brown was bowled by the lightning quick S Reid.
Morrison entered next scoring only 5 runs before Middleton eventually rewarded Addison’s hard work with a smart catch at first slip.

Malik joined Awan next in the pouring rain with both contributing a further 21 runs before play was abandoned due to rain, much to the annoyance of Ahmed who clearly thought they had a chance of winning?!!.  This ending was partly due to dubutant Williams nearly being caught with a flying bat which had slipped out of the hands of Malik.  Bon Accord finished with 81 for 4.

Therefore a fine batting performance and a penetrative bowling spell will much improve Ellon’s confidence going into this weekends fixtures.  Ellon play Queens Cross on Saturday and travel to Allan Park to play Cults in the Aberdeenshire Cup on Sunday.
