Barrett’s Brilliance In Vain
Ellon travelled to Allan Park on a sunny Saturday afternoon with the thought that they might be able to shock the title contenders.
On losing the toss Ellon were put into bat and due to the fact that Charlie Reid had not arrived Scott Middleton was forced to open with Ken Montgomery and Brett Howard.
With only 10 runs on the scoreboard Ellon lost their first wicket when Upjohn bowled Howard.
Jon Barrett replaced Howard and was soon in his stride smashing possibly the leagues best bowler Russell Balsillie out the park for a massive 6! Upjohn was next to get the treatment when Barrett took a liking to his friendly bowling hitting 28 from his next 4 overs.
Unfortunately at the other end the batsmen seemed to be struggling with Montgomery out for 7, Charlie Reid out for 0 and Steve Anderson 7.
Captain Middleton came to the crease with a point to prove and he decided not to bother getting his eye in instead he decided to hit Ronnie Valentine out of the attack. He hit 17 off Valentine’s 2nd over including 4 successive 4’s in the over. Despite upsetting Davie Meres the bowler managed to get his revenge by bowling Middleton for a well-played 23. Barrett was still in full swing hitting the bowling all over the ground for 4 and 6. The pair put on Ellon’s highest partnership of the day
Stephen Reid came to the crease for Middleton but was LBW first ball and so Colin Addison replaced him. Unfortunately Addison miscued a pull and it looped to mid wicket who took the catch with ease.
Chris Watson replaced Addison and he played the support man role to allow Barrett to continue playing his shots. Barrett brought up his 100 with a single to raptuious applause from his team mates. The pair put together a stand of 35 before Watson became Meres 3rd victim of the afternoon.
Andy Parks took the place of Watson and looked in good touch but was bowled by his former team mate at Westburn, Meres.
Kenny Hutcheson was Ellon’s last hope and he did his job in staying with Barrett, Barrett unfortunately edged the ball to slip and was out for a masterful innings of 113.
Ellon’s total of 183 from 37 overs was a good one but if only the other batsmen could have stayed in for longer to support Barrett a total of 220 would not have been out of their reach.
Colin Addison and Stephen Reid opened the
bowling for Ellon, unfortunately for Ellon neither bowler could get the
early breakthrough that Ellon required so Skipper Middleton rotated his
bowlers so Steve Anderson and Jon Barrett were introduced.
After a solid opening partnership of 123
by Brian Alexander and Davie Meres, Barrett managed to deceive Alexander
in the flight and was clean bowled for 54.
Graeme Gillanders was next in but it was his partner who was the next man out. After a good innings of 74 Meres was caught on the back foot to the Barrett arm ball and umpire Joe Scott had no alternative but to give him out.
Trevor Mutch replaced Meres but it was not long before Ellon were celebrating again this time the Barrett arm ball was far too good for Gillanders.
By now Cults were practically at the finishing line and Paul Upjohn joined forces with Mutch and the pair finished off the game in style.
Middleton did all that he could by using plenty of variation in the bowling line up to try and gain a breakthrough with Addison, Reid, Anderson, Barrett, Howard and Middleton himself but for no avail.
Ellon have tow matches next week both at
Gordon Park. On Saturday Banchory are the visitors and on Sunday
Cults travel to play the quarter final of the Aberdeenshire Cup.
